Job Summary:

West Texas A&M University, a member of The Texas A&M University System, invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Animal/Equine Science. This is a nine-month, tenure track position that reports to the Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences. WTAMU is seeking an innovative and dynamic educator and scientist to support a nationally recognized program in the equine industry. WTAMU is nationally recognized for its major in Equine Industry & Business, as well as the Judging Program, Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Equestrian Team, and Ranch Horse Team. WTAMU is a four-year academic institution with more than 9,000 students serving the Texas Panhandle and beyond. The geographic region is noted for its agricultural production and related agri-business. The Department of Agricultural Sciences has over 1,100 students and offers B.S., M.S, and M.Ag. and Ph.D. degrees.

Work Performed: 

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of expertise
  • Teach 9 hours per long semester utilizing face-to-face and/or online formats
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Active participation in departmental, university, scientific community, and industry service activities
  • Develop strong equine industry relationships in the region/state
  • Build a dynamic research program that will attract extramural and contract funding, with targeted areas of research that may include nutrition, health, animal well-being, physiology, reproduction, breeding, equine behavior and training, equine or agricultural business, or related disciplines
  • Work collaboratively with WTAMU faculty, other agencies and universities, and constituents in the equine industry to support regional teaching, research and service needs

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Animal Science or closely related field with an emphasis in equine science
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service
  • Working knowledge and experience in the equine industry
  • Academic or industry experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferred
  • Commitment to an interdisciplinary team approach to education and research
  • Desire and ability to establish working relationships with external constituents in the equine industry
  • Leadership skills, effective interpersonal communication, self-motivation, and the ability to thrive in a student-centered environment are essential qualities expected
