Job Description

Purpose:

The Nuclear Engineering & Science Center’s (NESC) Reactor Facilities play an important role in the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station’s (TEES) mission of performing research and leveraging expertise from universities, national laboratories, and state and federal agencies to improve lives through basic and applied engineering research. The Reactor Facilities provide support to instructional and research programs for all TAMUS colleges and departments as well as other organizations state-wide, nationally, and internationally. The two reactors are the foundation of the NESC, consisting of a 1-Megawatt TRIGA (NSCR) and a 5-Watt AGN along with associated research and service facilities and infrastructure.


The Reactor Engineer works with a team of engineers, technicians, and students engaged in activities associated with the conduct of operations, research, and development at the Nuclear Engineering & Science Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with reactor infrastructure projects including design, evaluation, safety analyses, construction/fabrication, installation and implementation, maintenance, and replacement (when necessary), in accordance with the reactor license conditions, technical specifications, and safety basis.
  • Assisting with non-reactor related facility infrastructure projects including design, evaluation, construction/fabrication, installation/implementation, maintenance, and replacement (when necessary), in accordance with the facility requirements.
  • Assisting with maintenance of the equipment necessary (with the support of Facilities staff) for each of the two reactors’ continued operation in accordance with their respective reactor licenses, technical specifications, safety bases, the relevant Federal and State regulations, and TEES/TAMUS policies and procedures. This includes reactor consoles and nuclear instrumentation, and all reactor-related systems including primary and secondary cooling, the Reactor Control System, the Reactor Protective System, and other systems, structures, and components, including experiment equipment.
  • Supporting existing and new research and service efforts utilizing the reactors and other NESC facilities by designing, developing, and installing new fixtures, experiment systems, and scientific instruments or equipment necessary to conduct the work.
  • Assisting with the evaluation and selection of appropriate software and equipment for research and operations related projects.
  • Development of documentation, including reports, plans, statements of work, and related documents for research and activities at the facility under supervision.
  • Assisting the Director and Associate Director—Operations and Research in review and required revisions of NESC procedures.
  • Performance of other duties as part of the NESC Reactor Facilities team as necessary and assigned by the Director.

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • No experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage resources and to balance safety issues with the need to fulfill the functions of the Nuclear Engineering & Science Center.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage priorities in a dynamic research and radiation services environment.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds at times.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Senior Reactor Operator’s license on both NESC reactors.
