Who we are

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP)  is an international research collaboration that coordinates seagoing expeditions  to study the history of the Earth recorded in sediments and rocks beneath the ocean floor. The JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) operates the scientific drillship JOIDES Resolution  on behalf of the National Science Foundation. What We Want

IODP is seeking an Assistant Editor (IODP Title: Editor II) who will edit and proof expedition publications and other program materials and coordinate with members of the graphics and production sections to promote consistency throughout each publication. They will apply standard formats, style guidelines, and workflow procedures and coordinate at least one area for the Editing section.  We seek to hire a candidate who will support our commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accountability (IDEA) as stated above. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in language, science, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of related experience in technical writing, editing, proofreading, and updating electronic content

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in science, language, journalism, or related or equivalent
  • More than two years of related experience in technical writing, editing, proofreading, and updating electronic content

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of American English usage and grammar.
  • Familiar with scientific ocean drilling or background in ocean sciences.
  • Working knowledge of FrameMaker, Acrobat, Illustrator, and/or other publishing tools.
  • Experience editing references and using Endnote shared libraries.
  • Familiar with XML and/or HTML coding.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain professional working relationships with people of diverse backgrounds
  • More than two years of related experience in technical writing, editing, proofreading, and updating electronic content

Responsibilities:

  • Scientific/ Technical Editing - Edits volume materials from riser, riserless, and mission-specific expedition platforms for consistency, style, and grammar. Understands and implements publication department workflow and apply the IODP style to text, tables, and figures. Hosts groups of scientists for week-long editorial postcruise meetings: explains and runs the meeting workflow, answers editorial questions, confirms table and graphics change requests, approves text corrections, and makes sure all volume material is reviewed by scientists. Prepares chapter galleys for authors to review, and approves author changes. Prepares volume tables as CSV, ASCII, or TXT to be included with the electronic volume. Ensures volume front matter and contents are complete and correct.
  • Development/Training - Researches assigned topics such as journal publisher initiatives for peer review models, metadata elements, digital readability, and workflow. Learns additional editorial tasks that are beyond the basics. Trains Editorial Assistants on basic formatting and editing tasks. Helps develop written procedures and advanced software as assigned.
  • Quality Control - Works with graphics and production sections to promote consistency throughout each volume; takes the lead in documenting and enforcing volume style. Proofs table, figure formatting, corrections, and final volume materials for style and consistency and approve for publication. Reviews and approves online publications in HTML and PDF.
  • Coordination and Administrative - Coordinates one or more editorial section tasks.  Organizes and maintains publications files to preserve version control. Maintains activity, time, and leave records. Performs other duties as assigned.
