Job Description

Under administrative direction, assists the Head Sports Performance Coach Olympic Sports with the implementation of individualized athletic-based training programs for student athletes and with the day-to-day operations of the sports performance facilities. Promotes Intercollegiate Athletics as an integral part of the University. Reports to the Head Sports Performance Coach Olympic Sports.  Adheres to NCAA and conference rules and regulations, as well as to the policies of the department, the University, and the AZ Board of Regents.

Essential Duties

  • Assists in coordinating and scheduling of use of sports performance facilities by team and individual student athletes.
  • Assists in the maintenance of sports performance equipment including cleaning and repair as assigned by Head Coach, Sports Performance for Olympic Sports.
  • Assists in the design and supervision of sports performance progress of assigned sports programs based on their competitive year and in conjunction with the program Head Coach or liaison. Assists with sports performance progress for all additional sports as assigned by Head Coach, Sports Performance for Olympic Sports.
  • Assists in the administering of tests that determine the fitness level of varsity student athletes and maintains records of their progress.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled meetings with Head Coach, Sports Performance for Olympic Sports.
  • May assist with warmups and post practice.
  • Ability to assist in weight management process without muscle mass loss.
  • Collaborates with Athletic Trainer on injury management, return to play & return to performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Sports Performance for Olympic Sports.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years prior coaching experience at the college/university, Elite club, or Professional level; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Bachelor's degree in physical education, exercise science, kinesiology, sports science, education, or related field
  • Evidence of previous strength and conditioning coaching experience working with collegiate, Olympic and/or professional athletes (2 years)
  • Evidence of a CSCS or SCCC certification required
  • Evidence of understanding the needs and demands of Division 1 sports, utilizing periods of strength, endurance, speed-strength, power and conditioning
  • Evidence of ability to lead training in a team setting and in one on one cases as needed.
  • Evidence of coordination & collaboration with coaches on periodization & planning thru the year
  • Evidence of understanding and incorporating “applied sport science” to training plan. 
  • Evidence of experience working independently and effectively to complete assignments with competing deadlines and priorities
  • Evidence of experience interacting effectively with coaches, student-athletes, and administrators. 
  • Evidence of experience in planning, organizing, prioritizing and supervising.
  • Evidence of experience in problem-solving and decision-making
  • Evidence of effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices, technology, and methods of all aspects of athletics performance training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and a commitment to conference and University rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Evidence of ability to interact diplomatically with all entities
  • Evidence of ability to successfully work under stress and in a professional manner
  • Evidence of ability to operate a computer using various computer software systems and databases

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled setting and/or outdoors in varying weather conditions and subject to extended periods of sitting/standing, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; will stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform duties 
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to more than 50 pounds
  • Activities will require ability to change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Schedule is TBD; may include early mornings, evenings and weekends. 
  • May be required to travel to away games with the team.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals (i.e. mobile devices).
  • Regular use of standard weight training equipment.
