Job Description

The Arts & Sciences Librarian, under general supervision, provides primary research support for the College of Arts & Sciences (science focus), including collection development, library instruction, reference and research reports, and other liaison activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Collection Development:  Serves as the library's subject specialist to evaluate, select, and deselect materials in all relevant media for the College of Arts and Sciences, with a focus on the sciences. Responsible for staying current with scholarly resources.

  • Library Instruction:  Develops and presents course-related instruction, seminars, orientations, and tutorials in research and related areas and in the use of library resources in a variety of settings and formats. Develops reference and research guides and other instructional and discovery tools in print and electronic formats using a variety of software.

  • Liaison Activities:  Provides library support for faculty research, scholarly communications, collection development, and other outreach for faculty in assigned departments. Assists faculty with the design of course assignments related to library research and provides instruction utilizing library resources for student research projects.

  • Reference and research support:  Provides information and consultation services in a clear and courteous manner in person and by phone, chat, email, or other means. Uses research interactions as opportunities to orient patrons to the range of resources available and to develop key information literacy skills.

  • Professional Service and Development:  Maintains currency with emerging information technologies and trends in scholarly communication, anticipating and facilitating new approaches to research in response to evolving patterns of publishing and information dissemination. Participates in the development of plans, policies, and procedures to support the library’s mission. Participates in library and campus initiatives, work groups, and committees.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Librarian 1: MLS and no experience

  • Librarian 2: MLS and 2 years related experience in academic library

  • Librarian 3: MLS and 4 years related experience in academic library

  • Librarian 4: MLS and 5 years of related experience in an academic library setting, including related supervisory experience

Preferred Experience:

  • experience providing library instruction/ presentations in courses

  • experience working with faculty to support their research projects/agendas

  • experience developing online tutorials and finding aids (Springshare and/or other platforms)

  • comfortable providing services in person and online

  • background, education, or interest in the hard sciences
