We are looking for an Animal Caretaker II, to join our groundbreaking, well-known College! The ideal candidate enjoys providing animal and facilities care. This person is crucial in handling and restraining research animals; operating mechanical equipment; performing minor maintenance repair; and providing occasional student worker supervision. Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of experience in animal care

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class “C” vehicle operator’s license within 30 days of employment

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Ability to read and understand written instructions

Preferred Experience:

  • More than two years’ experience in animal handling or animal care

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate mechanical equipment such as tractor, lawn mower, and weed eater

  • General knowledge of repairing maintenance issues such as leaking facets and troughs

Other Requirements or Factors:

  • May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty on a rotating schedule

  • Must be able to lift or move heavy feedbags

Responsibilities:

  • Animal Care - Feeds and waters animals. Cleans and disinfects animal housing facilities and feeding equipment at various locations including non-biohazardous facilities, ABS1 and ABSL2 Facilities. Monitors feed and hay intake of animals. Observes and reports any potential health problems. Prepares pens for incoming animals. Disposes of animal carcasses in prescribed manner.

  • Animal Handling - Assists with animal movements. Assists with restraint of animals for routine vaccinations, deworming, and fecal exams. Assists Investigators with restraining and handling of research animals as needed.

  • Equipment Use and Maintenance Operates mechanical equipment (gators, tractor, lawn mower, weed eater, etc.) in order to maintain facilities and move animals. Drives to various locations to perform these functions. Repairs minor maintenance issues (fix leaking facets, leaking troughs, etc.).

  • Weekend Supervision - Occasional weekend supervisor. Ensures students are trained according to Veterinary Medical Park's Standard Operating Procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.
