Job Summary
Provides care for laboratory animals and their environment through animal husbandry and keeps records according to State, Federal and University regulations.
Responsibilities
  • Manage breeding colony and research activities, including animal euthanasia.
  • Monitor and report animal health cases and administer medical treatments according to veterinary instructions.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed colony records.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Assure proper operation of equipment, effectiveness of procedures, and cleanliness of animal environment.
  • Assists with the collection of health monitoring and manages accurate and detailed monitoring records.
  • Work individually and as part of a team to ensure that the animal care program remains compliant with all university, state and federal regulations.


Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Standard vivarium environment; with typical vivarium environmental hazards and concerns. Standard laboratory environment; Safety shoes are required to be worn by all employees working in animal facilities
  • Seldom: Occasionally handles/works with biohazards or risks for potential job-related injury, rarely coming in contact with hazardous materials.


Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:

  • Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking, walking.
  • Often: Bending, reaching overhead, twisting.
  • Seldom: Lifting – up to 50 pounds, kneeling, squatting.

Minimum Qualifications
  • GED or HS Diploma
  • Four years’ related experience or a related Associate’s Degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • ALAT to be obtained within one year in the position.
Preferences
Direct knowledge of rodent breeding.
