The Centre for Religion, Economy and Politics at the University of Basel welcomes applications for the position of postdoctoral researcher for the project “What are the greening dynamics of religion? A multi-level analysis of religious environmental engagement in Switzerland”, beginning April 1, 2024. The project will study the environmental attitudes of members in religious communities in Switzerland. To this end, it will conduct member surveys and qualitative interviews with religious leaders. The position encompasses a 50-70% work load with a one-year contract that can be potentially extended up to two-and-a-half years. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jens Koehrsen, the project team will consist of a postdoctoral researcher, two researchers, and student research assistants. The project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).


Your position

  • Questionnaire development and implementation of member surveys in religious communities
  • Quantitative data analysis utilizing software programs (e.g. SPSS, Stata, R)
  • Conducting of qualitative interviews with religious leaders
  • Training and coordination of research assistants
  • Co-writing research articles for leading journals in environmental studies or sociology
  • Organizing stakeholder workshops and public events
  • Giving presentations and attending conferences
  • Writing project reports


Your profile

  • Master degree in sociology, political sciences, geography, sustainability, religious studies or similar
  • Expertise in quantitative research methods, additional expertise in qualitative research is an advantage
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent English language skills (C1 or higher), German or French is an advantage
  • Understanding of sustainability research and/or religious studies is an advantage
  • Strong interpersonal, intercultural and social skills
  • Willingness to relocate to Basel region
