The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) has opened one full time (100%) position for a Researcher in Automation and Robot Control at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) located in the USI-SUPSI Campus in Lugano, within the Institute of Systems and Technologies for Sustainable Production (ISTePS). Contract start April 1st , 2024, or date to be agreed upon.

 

Scope and purpose of the position

We are interested in highly motivated researchers with experience in real-time control and robotics, willing to work in a group of 30+ researchers (the Automation, Robotics and Machines Lab), renown at European level for applied research in industrial manufacturing. The candidate will participate to the development of innovative solutions in various fields of industrial robotics, including human-robot interaction and mobile robotics for industrial and service value chains, in the context of national and international research projects.

Skills/Qualifications

Tasks

Modeling, development and implementation of control methods for industrial robotics, including:

  • Motion control of industrial robotic arms.
  • Motion and force control for human-robot interaction.
  • Motion control of mobile robots (wheeled, legged), operating in harsh outdoor environments.
  • Integration of Artificial Intelligence techniques with control schemes.
  • Dissemination of findings in conferences and journals.

Specific Requirements

Requirements

Technical background:

  • Master’s degree in Control, Automation, Industrial Engineering or related field.
  • Proven research experience in robot control.
  • Excellent programming skills in different languages, e.g., C/C++, Python, Java, Matlab.

Soft skills:

  • Very good communication skills in spoken and written English.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Autonomous and responsible.

Additional requirements:

  • Positive attitude towards collaboration with a cross-disciplinary team.

Preferential requirements:

  • Ph.D. on topics related to real-time control of industrial robots and machines.
  • Good knowledge of ROS
  • Experience with collaborative industrial robotics applications and human-robot interactions
  • Experience in programming industrial robots (standard and collaborative) as FANUC, Kuka, Comau, UR.
  • Experience in AI-based control algorithms.
  • Experience in writing and management of European and National Projects.
  • Consolidated knowledge of at least two Swiss national languages.
