Offer Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

For the Laboratory for Neutron and Muon Instrumentation LIN we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow
Tuning Quantum Materials by Hydrostatic and Uniaxial Pressure

Your tasks
The project aims to develop new extreme-conditions capabilities for neutron scattering and muon spin spectroscopy experiments on quantum materials and to apply them for the study of exotic quantum phases. The project is a collaboration involving three Laboratories: Neutron and Muon Instrumentation, Muon Spin Spectroscopy and Theoretical and Computational Physics. In particular, the postdoctoral fellow will:

  • Perform research on frustrated magnets and other quantum materials, under hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure
  • Assemble, commission, and test new uniaxial pressure devices for neutron and muon instruments together with PSI engineers and technicians
  • Acquire and analyse complex data sets from scattering and resonance experiments (neutron, muon, NMR experiments)
  • Write and publish scientific articles and participate in national and international conferences
