100%, fixed-term
The Laboratory for Mesoscopic Systems based at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a joint laboratory between the ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute, which is the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. The current research focus is the investigation of novel magnetic systems at the mesoscopic scale making use of the clean rooms and large-scale facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and fostering synergies with the Department of Materials (ETH Zurich). We would like to hire a Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of 3D magnetization nano-tomography.
Project background
Magnetic materials are important for several real-world applications including motors, actuators, sensors and computation. We will characterize the magnetic and material microstructure with novel synchrotron-based 3D imaging techniques, which will give key information for enhancing their efficiency and performance. We are particularly keen to explore phase transitions in magnetic materials, especially focusing on exploring the intricate magnetic configurations made up of topological defects. Our research is primarily driven by deepening our understanding of these materials with the long-term prospect of leveraging their unique properties for applications.
Job description
You will be responsible for performing high resolution 3D imaging experiments on magnetic materials as well as developing novel tomographic techniques that can be applied to extended magnetic systems. The successful candidate will be also involved the preparation of samples, as well as their characterization using standard lab-based characterization methods (optical and scanning electron microscopy, magnetization measurements, Kerr microscopy) as well as advanced synchrotron x-ray techniques at the Swiss Light Source and internationally.
Your profile
You have outstanding qualifications with a PhD in physics, materials science or a related subject, and a background in magnetism and sample preparation methods with focused ion beam. Expertise in magnetic imaging and in image reconstruction methods will be appreciated. He/she should be motivated, proactive and creative in order to be successful, and should have good team and communication skills.
