Offer Description

The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2200 people.

The Laboratory of Biomedical Research in the BIO Department is looking for a

Postdoctoral Fellow
in protein crystallography

Your tasks
We are offering an attractive Postdoc position assessing the potential of Electron diffraction for high-resolution structural analysis of membrane proteins You will work with photosensitive or pharmacologically relevant targets using novel approaches in electron diffraction.

Our group (https://www.psi.ch/en/bio/schertler-group-research ) is focused on studying the mechanism of action of membrane proteins, including structural dynamics and the development of novel optogenetic tools.

The selected candidate will crystallize proteins with already established protocols, optimize the crystal size using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIBSEM)
milling and collect the data at the transmission electron microscope in diffraction mode. Similar experimental data will be compared to the performance of a table top electron diffractometer prototype which is already used in the pharma field. The project spans from fundamental to applied sciences involving collaborations at the Paul Scherrer Institute and 2 companies, and it gives the candidate the opportunity to gain leading expertise in the X-ray and electron microscopy / diffraction methods.

  • Experience in FIB-SEM manipulation, electron diffraction and/or crystallography would be beneficial

The PSI hosts important facilities required for crystallography: a synchrotron, the X-ray free electron laser SwissFEL and an electron microscopy facility (https://www.psi.ch/en/emf ). The BIO division together with our PSI detector group has developed a unique instrument for electron diffraction with a dedicated ED-detector based on PSI detector technology.
