Laser technician - Ultrafast Laser Systems

We are looking for a qualified laser technician to support the maintenance and operation of the “FastLab ” laser research infrastructure and its member groups at ETH Zurich. The infrastructure is used by a consortium of research groups in the Department of Physics for fundamental research activities in the area of ultrafast science. Successful research critically depends on the availability and top performance of the laser system and the associated experimental infrastructure.


Job description

As the holder of this position, you ensure the availability, correct functioning and best performance of the "FastLab" laser research infrastructure. You act as the main contact point for its users in all technical aspects related to its use and operation.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of the FastLab infrastructure
  • Support the technical design and implementation of experiments based on the requirements of FastLab users
  • Communication and coordination with service providers inside and outside of ETH
  • Training of new FastLab users on the laser system, including laser safety procedures

Your profile
  • Proven working experience in the assembly, operation, and/or maintenance of complex laser systems, including experience with amplified femtosecond pulses and/or femtosecond optical parametric amplifiers
  • Solid understanding of the pertinent concepts of laser physics, optics and electronics
  • Fluency in English, including the required technical jargon
  • Ability to communicate technical knowledge

We offer

You will be part of the operations team of the new FastLab ultrafast laser research infrastructure at ETH Zurich, reporting directly to the FastLab director. Besides your FastLab activities, you will also support participating groups in the Department of Physics. The position offers prospects for participation in a wider range of activities.

Employment is initially tied to the duration of the initial funding phase of the initiative which lasts until the end of 2025. However, a successful operation of FastLab is expected to lead to a continuation and possible expansion of this research platform with the perspective of permanent employment.
