About the position

Faculty of Environmental Sciences and Natural Resource Management (MINA) at Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) has a vacant 3-year postdoctoral position related to developing growing media in close cooperation with professional horticulture. Depending on qualifications and personal qualities, an extension to four years to include activities related to teaching may be considered.

The position is part of the collaborative and knowledge-building project “Modified pulpwood fibres to replace peat as a sustainable growing medium in professional horticulture” (PeatFree) (2023-2027), funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project focuses on developing sustainable substrates based primarily on modified wood fibre for the professional horticultural industry, that are as good as or better than peat regarding growing media quality and capacity to inhibit plant diseases. The postdoctoral fellow will develop growing media with appropriate chemical and physical properties in close cooperation with a PhD student and scientists at MINA and Faculty of Biosciences (BIOVIT).

Main tasks

The main activities will be related to the following tasks:

• Determine physical, chemical and biological properties and their stability in the growing medium
• Test different additives to improve growing media properties and develop strategies for reduced chemical pest control
• Develop suitable irrigation and fertilization regimes
• Contribute to testing the modified wood fibre-based growing media in different productions under professional growers’ conditions
• Analyse, write and disseminate results

The main purpose of the post-doctoral position is to qualify for work in high-level scientific positions.

Competence

Required Academic qualifications:

• PhD degree within a relevant scientific field such as specialization in soil science, horticulture or agronomy, preferably obtained within the last 5 years.
• Demonstrated record of publication in scientific peer-review journals
• Knowledge and experience with laboratory work, mainly soil chemical and physical analysis
• Knowledge and experience with plant growth experiments

The following experiences and skills will be emphasized:

• Motivation for the outlined research project
• Documented experience with statistical analyses
• Knowledge of Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages

You need to:

• be solution-oriented and possess the ability for independent work, displaying initiative and careful thought
• have an analytical and academic approach to research questions
• have good communication skills along with robust technical writing skills in English

Remuneration and further information

The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352 Postdoctoral Fellow, salary grade 62-77, (NOK 604.900 – 796.600), depending on qualifications. The position follows ordinary meriting regulations.
