Job description / Project description / Development plan:

The Norwegian Research council funded project “HE-POP: Studying the health effects of Persistent organic Pollutions, using Mass spectrometry, organoids and organ-on-chip” aims to investigate the effect of POPs on human health, with a specific focus on metabolic diseases. This cutting-edge research project utilizes advanced bioanalysis and biomaterials.

The project is a collaboration between the Department of Chemistry, Hybrid Technology Hub and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and is fully financed by the Norwegian Research Council.

We are currently seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the project. The primary focus of this position will be to develop bioanalytical mass spectrometry-based tools to study the effect of PFAS on pancreatic islets organoids, with a particular emphasis on diabetes-related proteins and signal peptides. This research will involve the use of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The second part of the project will involve analyzing the effects of PFAS on the interaction between pancreatic islet  organoids and liver organoids on a chip. This part of the project will be conducted in close collaboration with a PhD Researcher Fellow, who in this project will focus on metabolic disorders and liver organoids.

To excel in this role, we are looking for an analytical chemist with extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Experience with automated sample preparation or small-scale sample analysis, such as micro or nanoLC-MS, is highly preferable.

In return, we offer an international multidisciplinary environment and the opportunity to work at the Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, in close collaboration with the Center of Excellence Hybrid Technology Hub. The bioanalytical chemistry group consists of 2 fixed positions, 3 PhD Research Fellows in progress together with 10 masters’ students. For the HE-POP project, we will expand our group with one PhD Research Fellow and one Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working on different work package/task, but also together.

The main purpose of a postdoctoral fellowship is to provide the candidates with enhanced skills to pursue a scientific top position within or beyond academia. To promote a strategic career path, all postdoctoral research fellows are required to submit a professional development plan no later than one month after commencement of the postdoctoral period.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.

Qualification requirements:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition to be among Europe’s leading communities for research, education and innovation. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

• Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in Chemistry with strong analytical chemistry expertise. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Only applicants with an approved doctoral thesis and public defence are eligible for appointment
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English
• Extensive hands-on experience with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. The first paragraph on the CV should convincingly describe this experience
• Personal suitability and motivation for the position
