Departmental Engineer at the Michael Sars Centre (code 1085).

A temporary full-time position as Departmental Engineer is available in the Chatzigeorgiou Group animal facility at the Michael Sars Centre . The position has a desired start date of May 2024 and the person who is appointed will work in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis culture facility at the Michael Sars Centre. The position is temporary for 2 years.

About the department

The Michael Sars Centre is situated at the Marineholmen campus together with other research institutes at the University. The Michael Sars Centre is partner with European Molecular Biological Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany and is organized directly under the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.



Work tasks:

The main responsibilities are the following:

  • To organize and carry out bi-weekly field trips by car in the vicinity of Bergen to collect tunicates (primarily Ciona intestinalis adults) from costal locations (e.g. marinas).
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of tunicates and algae stocks in the ascidian facility (training will be provided if necessary).
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of the ascidian facility. In this context the successful candidate will perform small scale construction and electronics work.
  • Preparation of reagents required for the embryological manipulation and culturing of tunicate embryos and larvae (training will be provided if necessary).
  • Support and participation in field work related experiments carried out by the postdocs and researchers of the laboratory working on core and externally funded lab projects (training will be provided if necessary).
  • Some week-end and holiday duties are required and will be compensated for according to UiB regulations.
  • The working languages are English and Norwegian.


Qualifications and personal attributes:
  • A relevant bachelor level biology or engineering degree is required. Extensive and relevant practice combined with relevant formal training can in some cases compensate for insufficient formal education.
  • The position requires reliable work habits, cleanliness, and the ability to interact productively in the planning of animal collections, spawning, transgenesis etc with the scientific personnel.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English and Norwegian.
  • The applicant must hold a driver’s license (Category B) to carry out animal collections and field work in the greater Bergen area.
  • Ability to perform construction and electronics work related to small engineering projects is an advantage.
  • General interest in aquatic life and animal care or prior experience with maintaining animal facilities is an advantage


We can offer:

  • Position as departmental engineer (code 1085 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary from NOK 487 800 – NOK 540 500 (equivalent to pay grade 48 - 55) upon appointment. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly wellqualified applicant.
