About the position

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for an associate professorship in the Hydraulic Engineering research group.

The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching within topics covered by the group and for initiating and carrying out research in accordance with NTNU's and the research group's core activities and strategy. The candidate will be evaluated based on his/her core competencies in the field of hydraulic structures and hydraulic engineering.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering runs one of Europe's largest hydraulic laboratories, the NTNU Hydrotechnical Laboratory, where physical hydraulic experiments related to watercourses, sedimentation problems, hydraulic and hydropower structures are carried out as a part of R&D projects and education. The research group is a part of the research center HydroCen (https://www.ntnu.edu/hydrocen ) established in collaboration with the hydropower industry in Norway, and is a central actor in implementation of the faculty’s research strategy in the field of sustainable and renewable energy, with focus on hydropower and reliable and effective hydraulic structures. The Hydraulic Engineering research group aims at being leading in engineering education and research within these topics to support the society and industry with front end knowledge to meet existing and future engineering challenges.

The civil engineering sector is undergoing rapid transformations challenged by the green shift. Enabling technologies within digitalization, monitoring and automation open new possibilities. NTNU focus on research on digitalization and sustainable solutions, both as separate fields and as integrated parts of established and new professional disciplines. The position will be associated with a major research Centre Green2050 by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering towards the green shift in built environment.

The position will be responsible for teaching and research in the field of hydraulics, hydraulic structures and hydropower engineering. The department offers a national MSc program in Civil and Environmental Engineering and an international master program in Hydropower Development, and the candidate should be able to take a role in teaching activities in both these programs. Norwegian or Scandinavian language skills are required for teaching in the national MSc program.

Duties of the position

The associate professor is expected to play a leading role in the research and education in cooperation with existing staff at the department.

  • The successful candidate is expected to initialize and lead research within the field of hydropower structures, hydraulic engineering and watercourse engineering, including experimental research in the hydraulic lab at NTNU as well as field work
  • The candidate is expected to take an active role in the education of students including supervision, teaching, and course development for Master and PhD students, as well as for continuing education courses within the field
  • The candidate is expected to obtain and lead research projects from National and European Union (EU) funding programs

Required qualifications 
  • International research profile with relevant publication record
  • Relevant background in hydraulic engineering and hydropower structures engineering
  • Experience in initiating and successfully executing experimental research in hydraulic laboratories
  • Demonstrated interactions with industrial partners. Emphasis will be placed on practical experience and network within the hydropower industry
  • Ability to initiate an individual and creative research program
  • Experience in attracting and leading research projects
  • Excellent oral and written English skill

You must have the qualifications required for the position of associate professor in the field of hydraulic structure/hydraulic engineering, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts .

  • Your PhD, or academic work of the same scope and quality, must be within the field of hydraulic engineering with emphasis on hydraulic/hydropower structures
  • Your experience must be primarily in the field of hydraulic engineering with emphasis on hydraulic/hydropower structures
  • Your research must be documented and of high international quality
  • Research activity and output must demonstrate the ability to take up new research issues

The candidate is expected to work with critical national objects and infrastructure in Norway. Candidates with the potential of not fulfilling requirement for security clearance, access clearance and authorization as described in the Act Relating to National Security, cannot be considered for the position.

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations . If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses. 

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU .

Preferred qualifications
  • Practical experience and network within the Norwegian/Scandinavian hydropower industry
  • Ability and documented experience in initiating and leading research in the field hydropower structures and hydraulic engineering, and in obtaining external funding
  • Teaching and supervision experience from higher education
  • Oral and written skills in a Scandinavian language. Norwegian or Scandinavian language skills are required for teaching in the national Civil and Environmental Engineering MSc program

  • Relays information with clarity and ease, both orally and written

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross 550 000 NOK – 750 000 NOK per year, depending on qualifications and seniority.  From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment, you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite that you are able to be present and accessible at the institution daily.

In the assessment of the best-qualified applicant, we will emphasize education, experience and personal suitability as well as your motivation for the position. You will be expected to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertake supervision of Masters and Doctoral candidates. Evaluation of these skills will be based on documented experience and relevant teaching qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience at university level are preferred. Quality and breadth of the teaching qualifications will be evaluated.
