Āu Mahi | What You Will Do
Biomolecular Interaction Centre has an opportunity for a Research Associate to participate in the research project, Unravelling the interactions between mutant nucleophosmin protein and nucleic acids in acute myeloid leukaemia.

We seek a highly motivated individual with a research background in biochemistry, bioengineering or similar fields.

In this role you will undertake research to examine protein mutations found in acute myeloid leukaemia, and study the effects of these mutations on protein function. Specifically, you will work to develop and validate methods for assessing nucleic acid binding of a phase-separating protein. Additionally, you will use confocal microscopy to study the properties of the resulting protein condensates/droplets, and develop partitioning assays.

You will be mentored by Dr N. Amy Yewdall and located within the Department of Biochemistry, University of Canterbury, Christchurch. The position will also involve extensive collaboration within the Yewdall research team and with project partners at University of Otago, Christchurch.

Mōu | Who You Are
To be successful in this position you will ideally have the following:

  • A research background in biochemistry, bioengineering or similar fields.
  • Expert knowledge of biochemical processes, confocal microscopy and assay development.
  • Demonstrated experience of excellent research capabilities (design and leadership) required to carry out innovative and insightful research.
  • A proven ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts (both orally and in writing) to a wide variety or groups including scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  • Strong computer literacy and numeric skills, use of database management tools and statistical analysis software, and modelling skills would be an advantage.
  • Ability and willingness to undertake collaborative research.
