The Comparative Medicine Unit (CMU) which is the central animal services unit of Trinity College Dublin (TCD) seeks applications for the role of Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Grade 2. This is an important and dynamic role with a high level of responsibility for managing the technical services and resources of the unit. The CTO2 will work with the CTO1 in their role as line manager for the laboratory attendant staff (currently 6 LA/SLA) and technical staff (currently 5 TO/STO) who are engaged in delivering a high-quality technical service to researchers on the ground. The appointee will need to have strong technical and people management skills and extensive experience of working with animal models in a research setting. The role supports staff and users of the unit to work in a compliant manner adhering to best practice in terms of Health and Safety, and animal husbandry and care. In relation to people management, the role will involve the distribution of duties, assignment of work schedules and rosters, and the training of staff, all of which are essential to the effective day-to-day operation of the unit.

Post status: Permanent Contract

Hours of Post: 36.5 hours per week

Salary: This appointment will be made on the Chief Technical Officer 2 salary scale (€64,319 to €72,645 per annum) at a point in line with current Government pay policy. monthly/weekly payscales. (tcd.ie)

  • Please explain how your qualifications comply with the essential requirements of this post (degree in biological or animal sciences, IAT level 3) with significant experiential learning.
  • Please detail the nature of your experience in relation to working with laboratory animals and in providing instruction to staff under your care.
  • An understanding of the ethical principles, European regulations, legislation and accepted standards as they apply to the use of animals for research is highly desirable. Please indicate your level of knowledge, how it was obtained, and experience acquired to date in regulatory affairs.
