The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University invites applications to an associate professor position in the field of neuronal plasticity and memory processing at the circuit and systems level. The position is time-limited and runs for the period 1/7-2024 to 30/11-2027.



The position 

The position seeks to strengthen neurobiology research at the department with a focus on cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying memory formation and associative learning. The candidate must have peer-reviewed publications in this area as a senior author. As a researcher at the department, you will be part of a vibrant, collaborative and international research environment.



Successful candidates will be expected to:

‐ establish their own research team;

‐ deliver innovative research of the highest international standard;

‐ deliver teaching at the department

‐ supervise masters and PhD students;

‐ complete postgraduate teacher training for Professors at Aarhus University

‐ attract external funding

‐ write and speak English fluently


Your profile 

You are expected to have a background in neurobiology of plasticity, learning and memory as well as extensive experience in relevant techniques such as brain circuit mapping and manipulation, large-scale single cell imaging and/or single-unit electrophysiology recording in behaving rodents. Outstanding results and a high level of experience from a previous position including substantial, international experience are essential, as is the original approach, novelty and potential impact of the research proposal.



You are at expected to: 

•hold a PhD in molecular biology or related fields.

•have solid research background in neurobiology

•have group leader experience

•have a strong publication profile

•have experience in teaching and supervision of masters and PhD students

•have attracted substantial external funding.


The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics 

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University and comprises research within the areas of Plant Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, RNA Biology, Protein Science, Bioinformatics, and Cellular Health, Intervention and Nutrition. There are currently 142 full time scientific staff and 80 PhD students. The department is responsible for two educations: Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine with a yearly uptake of 110 students in total. Please refer to

Application procedure

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
