Associate Professor in Information Sciences and Computational Thinking

The Department of Design and Communication at the University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Humanities, invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Information Sciences and Computational Thinking. The position is placed at the Kolding campus of the University and is available from February 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Design and Communication is a highly interdisciplinary department with research activities in fields such as, design research, social design and interaction research, tourism, library studies, web communication, learning and didactics, interaction and emergent technologies, among other.

The department offers bachelor and master study programs in humanistic ICT with research-based teaching from areas such as: informatics, computational thinking, data science, agile software development methods, knowledge representation and ontologies, web communication, web technologies including semantic web, mobile web and relevant programming languages.

We welcome applicants with strong interest in the more formal and technical aspects of Information Sciences and an interdisciplinary orientation, who can strengthen the department’s profile within the areas of Information Sciences and Computational Thinking as concerns the study programs as well as the research areas mentioned above.

The position involves, among other tasks:

  • to participate actively in the department’s research programs and interdisciplinary collaborations involving technical and humanistic research areas.
  • to teach technical courses, to students from the humanities, with focus on problem solving in humanistic areas using Computational Thinking and programming skills within the study programs’ areas mentioned above.
  • to contribute to the Center for Learning Computational Thinking, hosted by the department, in collaboration with the department of Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • to contribute to the development of new research perspectives within the areas of Information Sciences and Computational Thinking, along with the development of corresponding applications for external funding.

The applicant is expected to have a Ph.D. within one of the following areas: Information Sciences, Computational Thinking, Computer Sciences or a closely related field. It is a requirement for the position that the applicant should have programming skills. In addition, the applicant must document:

  • teaching skills such as professional postgraduate teacher training for assistant professors or equivalent.
  • substantial relevant scientific and high-level research

Business experience from the IT sector is not required but would be highly welcomed.

International staff is expected to be able to teach in Danish after a two-year period.

Application, salary and conditions of employment, etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).

If the successful applicant has not documented teaching experience corresponding to assistant professor level, the applicant will be employed on trial for the first 18 months.

Applicants for an associate professorship at the Faculty of Humanities are requested to submit a teaching portfolio with the application as documentation for teaching experience as well as supervision qualifications. Please read more here .

Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.  We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected.

Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications.  

The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.

Shortlisting and tests may be used in the assessment process. Please note that only a shortlisted applicant will receive an assessment.
