Professor in Advanced Materials for Environmental and Resource Engineering - DTU Sustain
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
Job Description

Advanced materials are playing an ever-increasing role in many environmental applications, ranging from drinking water production, wastewater treatment, and pollutant management to energy production and resource recovery. Combining advanced materials with catalysis, structuring, and membrane processes offers a powerful tool for greener and more circular solutions to manage water-energy nexus and recover resources. To strengthen the research and education in this field, the Department of Environmental and Resource Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU Sustain) invites applications for a Full Professor position in Advanced Materials for Environmental and Resource Engineering.

DTU Sustain has established strong competence in the field of Advanced Materials with a unique combination of expertise in water, energy and resource recovery. The research integrates chemistry, catalysis, multi-scale material structuring and membrane processes for water treatment, energy conversion, and the valorisation of waste streams.

As a Professor, you will be leading a research group in the field of Advanced Materials for Environmental and Resource Engineering at DTU Sustain. The research at DTU Sustain is cross-disciplinary, and you are expected to work closely with researchers across sections and from other DTU departments and other universities. You will also have close collaboration with our extensive stakeholder network in the industry, utilities, and technology providers.

We expect you to explore innovation opportunities for sustainable technologies which enable fundamental changes to the way we perform water treatment and manage resources. Specifically we expect you to spearhead our innovation efforts within the area to foster spin-out, collaboration with private sectors and drive innovation projects at national and international levels.

Responsibilities and qualifications
We seek applicants to accelerate the deployment of transformative technologies in the real world for greener and circular solutions in terms of research, education and innovation and to provide scientific advice to relevant stakeholders. You are expected to employ fundamental principles at the convergence of material science, catalysis and membrane processes to synthesize, structure, characterize, and implement novel materials into next-generation sustainable technologies for water, energy and resource recovery.

Employment implies original research, education and innovation activities t the highest international level within one or more of the following research themes:

  • Advanced materials (e.g.,nano-structured materials as absorbents and catalysts)
  • Photocatalysis
  • Physical-chemical water treatment
  • Electrochemistry in fuel cells and electrolysis
  • Membrane fabrication and processes for water and energy technologies
  • Enzymatic membrane reactors for micropollutant degradation
  • Electrospinning

The evaluation process places a key emphasis on the candidate’s track record to attract national and international funding and ability to lead large-scale research projects and publish and disseminate research at a high international level. As a Professor, you are expected to have a clear vision for the research field, the development of the research group and the collaboration within DTU, externally and internationally, preferably with international research experience. You are keen to promote innovation and have solid experience and relevant education in the management of technology and training young researchers.

Your primary tasks will be, in collaboration with the group, to:

  • Strengthen the competence of the group in the following fields:
    • Synthesizing advanced materials for environmental applications: Metal-organic Frameworks, Layered double hydroxide, Zeolites and nanostructured fibers or catalysts
    • Employing advanced synthesis and fabrication methods to tailor the material’s structure and functionality: electrospinning, solution plasma, hydrothermal reaction, and sintering.
    • Developing new membrane materials for more sustainable processes: polymeric, ceramic, carbon, enzyme, and composite.
    • Optimizing membrane processes: micro-/ultra-/nano-filtration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, membrane distillation and reverse electrodialysis
    • Designing membrane reactors: combining membrane processes with photocatalysis, electrochemistry and enzymatic reaction.
    • Exploring technological solutions to address challenges in the water and energy technologies: depletion of emerging pollutants (e.g., pharmaceutical chemicals, PFAS), removal and upcycling of microplastics, ultrapure water production for Power-00to-X and sustainable industrial water reuse.
    • Applying the assessment tools to provide design principles for membrane materials and process development: life-cycle analysis, toxicity.
  • Perform research at an international level in the cross-field of water, energy, waste, resources, sustainability, and circularity.
  • Contribute to research in the group and with colleagues in related sections (e.g., Management of water systems, Materials and durability, Waste and circularity, Chemicals in the Environment and Quantitative sustainability assessment)
  • Provide public sector consultancy to inform decision-making with regard to water technology.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects and be the supervisor for PhD students covering a broad range of water-related topics.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD levels.

DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Documented experience and quality of teaching and curriculum development
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record and research vision
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position is a full-time and the desired starting date is 1st August 2024.
