Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

The University seeks to appoint a professor to Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research to commence as soon as possible.

Information on the department can be found at: https://www.cpr.ku.dk/ .

Job description
When considering applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of computational analysis and integration of human genomics, proteomics with other multi-omics and patient derived data.

Data on every aspect of human health is being generated at an incredible pace. From single human cells to patient and population level these data are being collected to develop new biomarkers, discover new drugs, and for improvement of human health. However, to fully capitalize from this accumulation of data there is a need to understand the data sets, in their biological context, across varying sizes, scales, and modalities. To achieve this there is a need for computational methods and approaches that can integrate such diverse data and extract the important biological and clinical information. Therefore, the successful candidate will at the highest international level lead computational based research focusing on overcoming these challenges. This will be through analysis and integration of biobank-scale human genome, proteome and other multi-omics and clinical data as well as large scale electronic health record data. To achieve this, it is expected that the candidate will develop new computational methods including deep learning based predictive and generative models that are able to integrate data across multiple modalities and depth such as from single cell to patient level data. The work could focus on complex human diseases such as metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity as well as psychiatric disorders. In addition to furthering basic research in the field, the work should aim at translating the knowledge and models from the large-scale data sets into clinical utility.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of researchers
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Find information about each criterion here: https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/criteria-for-recognising-merit .

Furthermore, each applicant must be able to document:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Provide research-based teaching

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.
