Offer Description

Dear all,

We are happy to offer a four-year Ph.D. position focused on tree-ring research.

Please feel free to share this position widely.

Best wishes,

Jan

Position: Ph.D. student

Closing Date: open until filled

Duration: four years; from ~February 1, 2023 until ~February 1, 2027

Place: The Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences, Department of Forest Ecology and actively cooperating with the dendrochronological laboratory the Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Trebon, Czech Republic.

Description

The selected candidate will be working on the project focused on tree-ring based reconstruction of tropical cyclones and their impact on forest ecosystems. The focus of the candidate will be on (i) the large-scale reconstruction of long-term changes in tropical cyclone activity and climate and/or (ii) impact of tropical cyclones on forest dynamics in East Asia and East USA/central America. The project is based on long-term research of Jan Altman and his team. Hence, the considerable advantage for the selected candidate is availability of the extensive dataset from the start of the position and thus small time-investment is needed before performing the analysis (compared to spending years with data-measurement typically required for joining a completely new project). Still, a selected candidate has to master lab techniques (if new for him/her) to know all aspects of tree-ring research. The working place is equipped with modern research equipment to measure various tree-ring proxies. We have active international cooperation as well as an international team helping a selected candidate on the way to Ph.D. degree, and, mainly to become an independent researcher.

Requirements

We are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated student with a Ms.C. in dendrochronology, forest ecology, climatology, geography or ecosystem modelling. The selected candidate is expected to: 1) participate in the fieldwork, 2) work independently and also function effectively in a team setting, 3) learn to independently manage data analyses and writing scientific articles, and 4) meet deadlines. It is important that the candidate is fluent in English and has an excellent ability to formulate herself/himself both orally and in writing. Skills in computer programming (e.g. in R), statistics (with focus on temporal analysis) and/or GIS will be valued during the evaluation process.

Applicants will send a structured CV, contacts of two referees, and a cover letter (maximum 2 pages A4) stating their previous work, qualification and motivation to Jan Altman ([email protected] ). Any questions should be sent to the same email. Use “TC PhD Position” in the subject line.

Best wishes,
Jan
