Location - This is a remote position primarily taking place in Maskwacîs but will require some travel to neighboring towns and the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

Working for the Department/Faculty 

The Indigenous Children’s Health Program (ICHP) is a five-year initiative aimed at improving the health and well-being of Indigenous children and their families in the community of Maskwacîs; supported by the Women & Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and the Department of Pediatrics within the University of Alberta. This program is a response to the pressing need for targeted program development and research to address health disparities among Indigenous children, recognizing the importance of culturally informed and community-centered approaches.

Position 

Under the direction of the WCHRI Research Associate, this position is responsible for providing project assistance and coordination for the newly developed Indigenous Children’s Health Program (ICHP). This position will work in Maskwacîs to support Indigenous women and children’s health in the community. The aim is to support research activities and administrative support in Maskwacîs, WCHRI and University of Alberta. The successful candidate will provide research, community engagement, administration support for the well-being of women and children’s health in Maskwacîs.

This is a remote position primarily taking place in Maskwacîs but will require some travel to neighboring towns and the University of Alberta in Edmonton. This position will also adhere to WCHRI policies and procedures, and be aware of Samson Cree Nation policies and procedures.

Duties 

  • Plan and assist with data collection; support report writing; develop posters and recruitment documents as needed; and provide feedback on research documents such as ethics applications, interview guides, and survey development.
  • Interview participants, transcribe interviews, and analyze data. Gather feedback from the community on an ongoing basis. Support Elders and community member engagement.
  • Organize and attend research meetings, meetings with community members and university partners.
  • Develop and manage social media platforms, in coordination with the WCHRI communications team.
  • Assist with relationship building in Maskwacîs and outside partners. Assist with community workshops that contribute to the betterment of women and children’s health. Plan and/or attend community events as a representative of WCHRI.
  • Develop and monitor research budgets.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Nehiyawin (Cree Language) and protocols is required
  • Minimum 1 year post-secondary education combined with community-based experience is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years direct and focused experience working with Indigenous people, organizations, and/or communities is required.
  • Must have dependable WIFI and transportation
  • Must live in or near Maskwacîs
  • Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) 
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision 
  • Precise documentation skills, detail oriented 
  • Ability to work efficiently in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Broader knowledge of Indigenous research ethics, protocols, and methodologies (including key application of TCPS2 and Chapter 9: Research with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples) is an asset.
  • Research support experience an asset
  • Experience working with children and their families an asset
  • Familiarity with First Nations principles of ownership, control, access, and possession (OCAP) is an asset.
  • Experience with the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services an asset
