Working for the Department/Faculty

The Department of Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. We are seeking strong candidates who exhibitthe potential to lead an outstanding research program at the interface of virology and structural biology. Areas of interest cover a broad range of topics with relevance to significant challenges in the health sciences. These include, pandemic preparedness, emerging pathogens, viral evolution and variants of concern, and the discovery and development of antiviral drugs and/or vaccines. 

The mission of the Medical Microbiology & Immunology Department is to provide an enriched environment for research, education and training in the field of infection and immunity that links molecular mechanisms to disease, treatment, and prevention.The department is comprised of well-funded, highly collaborative researchers, state-of-the-artcore facilities, including a newly establishedcryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) platform centered around the Krios G4 transmission EM, and talented trainees from across the globe. The candidate will also have the opportunity to affiliate with multidisciplinary research groups such as SPP-ARC (Striving for Pandemic Preparedness - The Alberta Research Consortium) and the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology.Members of the consortium or the institute benefit fromexceptional funding opportunities that include research grants and student support.

Position

The successful candidate will conduct innovative independent research to attract funding and will contribute to the Department's undergraduate and graduate programs. A competitive start-up package and research support, along with the opportunity to apply for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquirecutting edgeequipment, will be provided. 

Applicants must have a PhD, postdoctoral experience and a proven record of high-quality research.
