Offer Description

The focus of the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) for Behavior, Cognition and Teaching (ECCE) is the behavioral analysis of symbolic functioning, based on stimulus equivalence and on the Relational Frame Theory. The postdocs will contribute to this program.

The institute is one of the INCTs in São Paulo state (Brazil) with joint support from FAPESP, the São Paulo Research Foundation, and CNPq, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development, an arm of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. INCT-ECCE is based at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar).

Fellowship 1: Symbolic and attentional processes: Stimulus control and observing responses (Supervisor: Gerson Y. Tomanari, University of São Paulo – USP)

Deficits in symbolic functioning can result from selective attention to stimuli. We intend to reassess the concept of discrimination and conduct experiments with human participants using visual discrimination tasks and eye-tracking monitoring.

Fellowship 2: Symbolic Processes: Stimulus Control and Recombinative Generalization (Supervisor: Deisy de Souza/UFSCar)

Procedures based on stimulus equivalence have generated robust results regarding reading comprehension, but not regarding decoding. The goal is to develop experimental conditions to foster abstraction and recombinative generalization in reading.

Fellowship 3: Stimulus control and derived relations: Applications to behavioral analysis of sociocultural and/or aesthetic issues (Supervisor: Júlio de Rose/UFSCar)

The goal is to contribute to the development of this line of research through a project that applies advances in research on stimulus control and symbolic behavior to the investigation of phenomena of social/cultural interest (e.g., aesthetic appreciation or attitudes and prejudices).

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationality. Each selected candidate will receive a FAPESP Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 8,479.20 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 10% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent on items directly related to the research activity.
