About the opportunity

The Sydney Careers team is looking for a Career Development and Internships Officer who will facilitate optimum career and employment outcomes for undergraduate and postgraduate students during their studies and upon graduation by researching the needs of students and connecting students with internship

opportunities in a range of industries. The Career Development and Internships Officer will also support students’ career journey by development and delivery of a range of professional careers services, including career skills workshops and individual services.

As a member of the Career Development Team, the incumbent will actively promote Careers Centre services to students and faculties.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • increase the number of internships available to students by identifying internship opportunities through a variety of avenues, including but not limited to: Sydney CareerHub and industry and faculty liaison

  • liaise with faculty to identify challenges in sourcing internship opportunities for students; develop and maintain relationships with industry to address these challenges

  • deliver careers education services to students and groups to prepare them for internship opportunities, both undergraduate and postgraduate; tailored to faculty and school needs as required

  • identify student career development needs; develop appropriate programs, deliver workshops, individual counselling and resources to meet these needs

  • evaluate internship needs of students and related career programs and activities and feed the information into the strategic planning process

  • in conjunction with the Career Development Manager, market programs and services to students and faculties through a range of methods and within available resources, utilising the latest technological methods and faculty contacts

  • maintain relevant professional links, such as membership of NAGCAS (National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) and ensure best practice exemplars are developed within the Careers Centre

  • maintain awareness of major learning and teaching initiatives within the university and ensure that educational programs reflect and complement these activities.

About you

  • computer skills (including Word, Excel, Filemaker Pro, Outlook and Internet)

  • familiarity with and understanding of the tertiary environment

  • knowledge of skill requirements of different occupations and professions

  • strong teamwork and collaborative skills in a deadline oriented environment to ensure that CDT produce required outcomes

  • understanding of graduate labour market and recruitment procedures and practices in Australia and overseas

  • experience in careers counselling and training and development in careers or related field

  • experience in designing, developing, delivering and evaluating educational programs

  • experience in the management of an Internship or student placement program.

Please note: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Australian Temporary Residents currently employed at the University of Sydney may be considered for a fixed term contract for the length of their visa, depending on the requirements of the hiring area and the reasons for the position.
