Academic Success Advisor
Job Description
The College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA) - Polytechnic campus is currently seeking an Academic Success Advisor to advise our online undergraduate students. We offer majors in arts and sciences, counseling, and transfer friendly degree completion majors.
In this role, the Academic Success Advisor acts as a key contributor to promoting and supporting student retention and timely progress towards degree completion. Working in a team-based model, academic success advisors, support students from admission to graduation through a range of virtual and in-person academic advising and support strategies.

Essential Duties
- Serve as a professional academic advisor for the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts (CISA), advising undergraduate students pursuing degrees either on-campus or through ASU Online.
- Advise students on university general studies, degree requirements, academic policies and procedures.
- Update student records in DARS and PeopleSoft to reflect student progress.
- Answer student inquiries via Salesforce.
- Assist students in setting academic and career goals and provide appropriate referrals to ASU resources for academic success.
- Frequently collaborate with university partners to ensure students have accurate information regarding degree requirements.
- Meet with students via Zoom, phone, e-mail, in-person, and during orientation programs.
- Present to students, families and the larger ASU community on the degree programs supported.
- Responsibilities may require some evening hours and occasional weekend assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of a Master’s Degree in a related field.
- Experience working with general curricular elements and structures (e.g., courses, units, prerequisites, majors and minors, academic policies).
- Experience assessing college transcripts/previous coursework and helping students understand attainable academic pathways and career possibilities.
- Experience evaluating student/client needs and referring to relevant internal and external support resources.
- Experience with analytical problem-solving skills to identify and research individual needs, including development of strategies to successfully meet those needs.
- Experience working with culturally diverse communities and recognizing issues faced by underrepresented populations.
- Working knowledge of special population advising (i.e., online, international students, first-year, transfer, etc.) in an educational setting at an institution of higher learning.
- Experience navigating difficult conversations using compassionate listening, de-escalation techniques, and collaborative resolution development.
- Experience conducting group and public presentations.
- Experience working with confidential information in compliance with policies and laws regarding privacy of information (e.g. FERPA).
- Experience in using writing, editing, and proofreading skills to compose high-level correspondence; ability to prepare concise summaries and effectively communicate nuanced options and outcomes.
- Experience in taking initiative and collaborative approaches in team environment.
- Experience working with student information systems necessary for communication, tracking student data and/or case management in a higher education setting (e.g. Peoplesoft, Salesforce for Education, DARS).
Working Environment
- Activities are primarily performed in a regular climate-controlled office subject to extended periods of sitting.
- Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds.
- Clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
- Ability to utilize computer, phone, and additional office equipment (printer, fax, etc.)
- Ability to work both independently or within a complex structured team.
- Work from general instructions on standard job duties and specific directions/instructions on new assignments.
- Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
