100%, Singapore, fixed-term

Dense and Green Cities: Emerging Models of Integrated Urban Development at the Singapore-ETH Centre Future Cities Lab Global is looking for a Post-Doctoral Researcher to conduct and coordinate research on the systems performance dimensions of sustainable integrated districts with a focus on Singapore.

Project background

FCL Global is an international knowledge hub with the capabilities to conduct fully transdisciplinary and comparative research on the complex challenges of urbanisation. It builds upon Future Cities Laboratory, which, since 2010, within the frame of the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC), grew into one of the most impactful urban science research centres in the world. FCL Global innovates upon those foundations with the benefit of two distinctive regional perspectives: one from the tropics and another from temperate Europe, embedded at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ).

Dense and Green Cities: Emerging Models of Integrated Urban Development explores the development of sustainable integrated districts (SIDs) as a model for high-density high-liveability future cities through a series of case studies with a focus on Singapore and Switzerland to allow for an evaluation, comparison, and learning on how SIDs are best planned and realised in various settlement systems. The project captures important aspects of the urban planning and design, architecture, social, environmental, economic, and governance systems performances of SIDs systematically through a number of work packages and an interdisciplinary team of researchers that consists of urban planners and designers, architects, engineers, and scientists. The research is conducted in close collaboration with important stakeholders from the industry as well as from government agencies in both Singapore and Switzerland as well as in a number of other international locations.

Job description

Lead the environmental performance assessment work package for buildings and urban systems at the district level. Develop physical-based models at the district level and evaluate the models via data-driven approaches to investigate thermal comfort and urban environment. Develop strategies for the improvement of the existing urban systems and the future urban development. Integrate the environmental performance assessment with a socio-spatial context. Coordinate the research with other work packages in Dense and Green Cities.
