The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. For the Applied Catalysis and Spectroscopy group we are looking for two
PhD Student’s
Transient operando spectroscopy of heterogeneous catalysts
Your tasks
- You will work on the preparation and advanced characterization of catalysts based on ion exchanged zeolites and supported noble metals
- You will design and carry out in situ/operando ATR-IR, XAS, and XRD/PDF experiments, thus including experiments at synchrotron facilities
- You will use modulated excitation systematically to enhance the output of spectroscopic experiments
- You will contribute to build and use a setup to combine ATR-IR with online analytics or quantitative surface acidity measurements
- You will analyze and interpret the spectroscopic data with the aim of advancing the understanding of reaction mechanisms
- You will disseminate your results in form of publications and presentations at national and international conferences

Skills/Qualifications
Your profile
- You have a Master degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or material science
- You have acquired first experience in in situ/operando characterization of materials, catalysis and/or material synthesis
- Very good command of written and spoken English is a must
- Basic knowledge of Python, MatLab and/or analogous softwares is advantageous
- You will be enrolled as PhD student in the doctoral program of EPFL, from which you will receive the PhD title
