PhD Researcher - Cyber-Physical Systems’ (CPS) Resilience
ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities of the world with a strong focus on science and engineering. In 2010 it established the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) to do interdisciplinary research on pressing problems.
In collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Future Resilient Systems (FRS)". The FRS addresses the challenges with critical infrastructure systems that provide essential services to modern societies, which is of particular importance to innovation-driven economies like Singapore and Switzerland. Within this framework we are announcing the following job opening.
Job description
The integration of cyber and physical systems provides new opportunities and challenges in system control and monitoring. This project focuses on the electric power system as a cyber-physical system with a particular focus on approaches that enable the integration of distributed renewable generation. The core research question is how to design the control infrastructure of future electric power systems to ensure resilience of the system, i.e. how to leverage distributed and centralized coordination and ad hoc clustering to make the system more resilient even with high penetration of renewable generation. Prof. Gabriela Hug at D-ITET ETH Zürich is the advisor of the chosen candidate. The earliest starting date is January 4th, 2022. Workplace is Singapore. Please note that the employment will be at the Singapore-ETH Centre and local working regulations will apply.
Your profile
The successful applicant should have:
- A MSc degree or equivalent University level diploma in electrical, industrial & operational research, mechanical, control engineering, or a related field.
- Principal qualifications include power systems engineering, programming experience and strong mathematical skills, ideally in stochastic modeling and/or distributed optimization.
- She/he should be further experienced in cyber-physical system modeling, resilience analysis and communication/power grid modeling.
- A solid knowledge of written and spoken English is mandatory, as this is the language for communication at work.
- Good interpersonal skills, the ability to thrive in a diverse, multidisciplinary environment, and the ability to present work at international conferences.
