PhD Positions in Polymer Chemistry

Updated: 4 months ago
Job Type: Permanent

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Laboratory of Polymeric Materials (Prof. Athina Anastasaki) in the Materials Department of ETH Zurich is looking for exceptional and highly motivated PhD candidates with a strong interest in polymer chemistry, sustainability, and synthesis.

Job description

The global issue of the non-sustainability of plastics is a problem at the forefront of polymer chemistry. Transforming plastic waste into feedstocks for creating novel materials presents many great opportunities. However, the considerable chemical resistance of numerous plastics, combined with the substantial energy demands and limited specificity of pyrolysis, underscores the necessity for innovative methodologies to enhance the feasibility of chemical recycling. To contribute towards solving this problem, our group is currently developing new methods of degrading and depolymerizing polymers using radical chemistry to regenerate useful starting materials such as pure monomers, chain transfer agents, and/or initiators. We are particularly interested in new catalytic methods of chemically recycling polymers such as polymethacrylates, polystyrene, and polyolefins. Prospective candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with other members of the group to guide their research projects in this area.

The PhD positions are fully funded for four years (extendable) with a competitive salary at level 1 according to ETH standards (~CHF48000 pa in 2023) with the possibility of yearly bonuses upon satisfactory performance. Starting dates are negotiable, and applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

Your profile
  • We are looking for exceptional candidates with an MSc degree or equivalent in chemistry, materials science or related areas and a strong background in polymer chemistry and organic chemistry.
  • Previous experience and knowledge in ATRP, RAFT, organic synthesis, and polymer characterization is an advantage but not a must.
  • Above all, you should be highly passionate about science and research, self-motivated, curious, creative and enthusiastic in what you do, as well as having a strong team spirit, excellent critical thinking skills, and advanced knowledge of written and spoken English.
