Levitation and control of microscopic objects:

Levitation of microscale objects in high vacuum provides new opportunities for quantum science, sensing, non-equilibrium physics and materials science. This research field capitalizes on the achievements in optomechanics, atomic physics and control theory.


Project background

We have openings in the areas of 

  • Inertial force sensing with levitated particles
  • Cavity-mediated entanglement
  • Brillouin scattering in levitated materials
  • Development of hybrid rf-optical traps

    We are looking for curious and motivated PhD students to join our levitodynamics team. 


    Your profile
    • Physics or engineering background
    • Experience with experimental work in particular with lasers and measurement techniques

    The successful candidate shares our passion for cutting edge research, brings in his/her motivation and creativity, can clearly communicate, enjoys working closely and respectfully within a team and has experience in laboratories and in data analysis.  Prior experience in optics/photonics, atomic physics or optomechanics is highly valued but not mandatory.

    We are a research group at ETH Zürich with extensive expertise in optomechanics, nanophotonics and integrated optoelectronics. During your PhD, you will get exposed to a multitude of technologies including measurement techniques, optics, lasers and vacuum technology.
