PhD position in the field of carbon-based nanomaterials for optical applications

Updated: 11 days ago

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

The

nanotech@surfaces Laboratory

is looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong experimental background in materials chemistry, solid-state physics, or nanoscience who wants to pursue cutting-edge research at a world-class level.

Your tasks

Within a collaborative project between the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) and the University of Strasbourg, we aim at developing carbon-based nanomaterials as a novel platform for light sources, with particular emphasis on atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). Within this project, you will work on the on-surface synthesis and scanning probe characterization of GNRs with optical properties (intrinsic fluorescence, localized emitting centers) that make them highly relevant for integration into optoelectronic devices. To preserve GNRs' intrinsic properties upon substrate transfer and device integration, you will investigate dry-transfer and encapsulation methods in ultra-high vacuum. Successful substrate transfer shall allow the investigation of GNRs' photo- and electroluminescence properties in a field-effect transistor configuration.

Your profile

Required qualifications include a Master's degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or equivalent, with a strong solid-state physics, physical chemistry, or nanoscience background. Prior experience with ultrahigh vacuum technology, scanning probe microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy is advantageous but not strictly required. We are looking for a highly motivated team player who is motivated to learn and has excellent English communication skills.

Our offer

Join our world-class team to explore carbon-based systems for nanoelectronic, optical and quantum applications within a global network of collaborators where you can build a competitive research portfolio. Located in the Zurich Area, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technologies (Empa) offers outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment and competitive salaries.

The position is available starting May 2024 or upon agreement, with a planned duration of three to four years.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
