Offer Description
We invite applications for a full-time PhD position in the Division of Urban design and Planning (Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering ) at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. You will be part of a team of researchers in the Spatial Morphology Group (SMoG) at Chalmers and contribute to an international project focusing on the 15-minute city concept.
The 15-minute city is an urban planning concept that aims to create neighborhoods where residents can access all essential services, such as work, grocery stores, schools, and parks, within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from their homes. This concept promotes walkability, reduces the need for long commutes, and fosters vibrant, self-sufficient communities. Because access to high quality green areas is important for people’s health and wellbeing, this PhD project focuses on the green and blue infrastructure that we regard as an integrated part of the 15-minute city concept.
You will be responsible for the development of a GIS model for the metropolitan area of Gothenburg involving the green and blue layers of the 15-minute city concept. You will develop a model to describe the local and systemic qualities of the green and blue areas that form a network or patchwork with variations in quality and connectivity. Besides developing a GIS model for the current situation, you will be responsible to map the changes in the green-blue network since 1960.
Besides identifying, analysing and assessing the distribution of the green and blue network, you will be responsible to analyse its accessibility for people and its impact for human movement and copresence using observation data (observed in the field or big data).
Project description
The PhD position is part of the EMC2 project that aims to reduce the risk of 15-minute city policies exacerbating the tensions between central cities and peripheral areas, the project proposes a new model, adapted to conditions in peripheral areas: Evolutive Meshed Compact City (EMC2). EMC2 proposes a pragmatic transition pathway to the 15-minute City for European metropolitan peripheries, along existing main roads. More specifically, the project will produce: a transferable, multi-scale method to assess EMC2 potential in European suburban areas, and guidelines for EMC2 implementation, including examples and obstacles.
The EMC2 project has been selected for financing within the European tender of the Horizon Europe call “Driving Urban Transitions”. The project will be carried out by a consortium of four academic research units and four local authorities in four different European countries : UMR ESPACE (CNRS – Université Côte d’Azur – Aix-Marseille Université – Avignon Université), Agence d’Urbanisme Azuréenne and Agence d’Urbanisme de Lille Métropole, in France, SMoG (Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering) and City of Gothenburg, in Sweden, DESTeC (University of Pisa) and City of Viareggio, in Italy, as well as the Department of Urban Design (Vienna University of Technology), in Austria.
Information about the division and the department
The Spatial Morphology Group (SMoG) where the post-doc researcher will be placed, focuses on describing spatial form (i.e. spatial configuration and character of the built environment) using rigorous analytical frameworks with the aim to describe and predict the impact of spatial form on human activity, which in turn opens for exploration of far broader social and economic themes, for instance social segregation and sustainable markets.
The Division of Urban design and Planning (Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering ) researches and educates urban questions in all scales, from single urban spaces to larger urban landscapes and entire regions, focusing on how the urban design and planning can support sustainable development. Within the division, three research areas are distinguished focusing on spatial morphology, spatial processes and critical theories respectively.
Major responsibilities
The PhD candidates main responsibilities are:
- Develop a GIS model involving the green and blue layers of the 15-minute city concept.
- Map the changes in the green-blue network since 1960.
- Integrating this model with already existing models on street networks and built density.
- Develop a methodology to describe the local and systemic qualities of the green and blue areas that form a network or patchwork with variations in quality and connectivity.
- Identify, analyse and assess the impact of the green and blue areas for human movement and copresence using observation data (observed in the field or using big data).
Parts of the work will be developed in close collaboration with a Postdoc researcher in the group who studies how the built environment including green and blue areas impact biodiversity.
