We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

Hantaviruses cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). In Sweden Puumala virus (PUUV) causes HFRS. No approved treatment or vaccine exist, and case-fatality rates are high: 35-40% for HPS and up to 10% for HFRS. HPS and severe HFRS are characterized by inflammation and severely increased vascular permeability. However, the mechanisms underlying hantavirus disease are currently unknown, hampering the development of treatments.

In this project we will investigate molecular mechanisms behind how hantavirus manipulates infected cells, including how they inhibit cell death, and what the consequences of this is for infected cells and pathogenesis. The successful candidate will mainly perform in vitro studies.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.
