PhD student in in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography focusing on modeling of coastal transport processes
Ref. No. SU FV-4826-22
at the Department of Meteorology . Closing date: 5 February 2023.
At the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department includes some 75 individuals, of which about 35 are teachers and scientists, 25 PhD students and 15 administrative and technical staff. The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research that, together with other departments at the university covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC) , where we together with KTH and other universities develop e-Science tools and infrastructure to promote scientific breakthroughs in climate science. We also collaborate with the Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre adressing environmental issues and climate change in the Baltic Sea region.
Project description
Coastal transport processes (turbulent and wave-induced dispersion, upwelling and downwelling currents) determine spreading of dissolved biogeochmical properties, including algae blooms that have adverse effects on water quality and coastal services like desalination of drinking water and tourism in the Baltic Sea. Intense algae blooms often coincide with summer heatwaves and the increased water demand, all predicted to intensify under the climate change. Developing an apt forecasting system for this "multi-hazard" to inform sustainable management regional water resources becomes thus a priority.
The PhD project will use a combination of ocean modelling, biogeochemical modelling, Lagrangian simulations, risk modelling and data analysis to investigate coastal transport processes in the Baltic Sea with relevance to development of a forecast system for algae blooms and their impacts on coastal services. The PhD position is a part of the collaborative project funded by A Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (FORMAS) and involving Stockholm University (SU), the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) and Region Gotland. The PhD student is expected to spend 25% of their time at SMHI and take part in annual workshops with stakeholders on Gotland.
Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
The academic area board may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant under special circumstances.
The specific entry requirements additionally require a minimum of 90 higher education credits in any of the fields of meteorology, oceanography, physics or chemistry; and at least 15 higher education credits in mathematics as well as a degree project of at least 15 higher education credits. At least 60 higher education credits of these courses must be on the second-cycle level. In addition, proficiency in English language, equivalent to English B in Swedish high school, is required.
The specific entry requirements may also be fulfilled by a person who has otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
The qualification requirements must be fulfilled before admission to the progamme.
Selection
The selection between candidates who meet the entry requirements will be made with reference to their ability to benefit from the training. However, the fact that an applicant is deemed able to transfer credits from previous training or professional experience may not alone give the applicant priority over other applicants in the selection process. Admission decisions are made in accordance with current delegation policies.
The selections process takes into account the familiarity and skill of the subject, ability to communicate in spoken and written English, analytical ability, creativity, initiative and independence, and ability to interact in group. The selection is based on the relevance of previous studies, grades of higher education courses (especially those at second-cycle level), quality and scope of degree projects, references, interviews, and supplemented letter of intent.
Admission Regulations for Doctoral Studies at Stockholm University are available at: www.su.se/rules and regulations .
Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.
Starting date as soon as possible. The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may then be extended for a maximum of two years at a time to a maximum of four years of full-time study.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
Please note that admission decisions cannot be appealed.
Stockholm University strives to be a workplace free from discrimination and with equal opportunities for all.
