Offer Description
Changes in basic indicators of water quality in the selected water reservoir for drinking water supply under hydrometeorological conditions changing during the year
Supervisor: Ing. Yvetta Velísková, PhD.
Workplace: Ústav hydrológie SAV, v. v. i. / Institute of Hydrology SAS
Field of study: Agriculture and Landscaping
Study program: Landscape Engineering
Form of study: full-time / part-time
Theses:
Water reservoirs are one of the possible sources of drinking water for the inhabitants of Slovakia. In some regions, they represent the only possible way of supplying the population with such water. As a result of anthropogenic activity and different land use, but also as a result of ongoing climate change, the quality of water in these bodies changes. Torrential rains, periods of drought - lack of water, high summer temperatures, or other manifestations of climate change negatively affect the water quality in these reservoirs, despite any legislative measures. The content of the dissertation will be the monitoring and analysis of changes of the basic indicators of water quality in selected water reservoirs in different seasons, locations and under different hydrological conditions. A prerequisite for the successful achievement of the goals is a thorough research of the current state of knowledge of the issue, a theoretical analysis of possible methodological procedures, field measurements at selected locations using modern instrumentation, as well as the application of statistical analysis methods.
Rationale:
Climate change will affect all water sources, their quality and regime in the coming years. The strategy of adaptation to climate change, which was approved by the Slovak government in October 2018, foresees a decrease in total precipitation in this century, and thus also the usability of available water resources. At the same time, probably the occurrence of strong storms will increase in Slovakia, which may cause a decrease in the quality of surface water sources, especially those that are used for supplying of the population with drinking water. In the recent period, among other things, the cyanobacteria occurrence in water reservoirs has increased, which also reduce the quality of raw water. As the action plan for the environment states mentioned, as well as the concept of water policy, extreme weather fluctuations and anthropogenic activity are already leading to threats of drinking water sources. Despite the fact that a significant part of the population in Slovakia is supplied with drinking water from underground sources, in some regions people are still strongly dependent only on surface sources - water reservoirs.
Financial coverage:
Institute of Hydrology SAS owns instrumentation for field experiments, as well as software equipment for numerical modelling. The actual realization of the dissertation will be supported by the APVV project entitled " Technological Methods for Removal of Endocrine Disruptors and Elimination of Cyanobacteria Occurrence and Their Undesirable Effects in Water Sources to Ensure Drinking Water Quality according to the Increasing Demands of New EU Drinking Water Directive" (2023-2027).
Zmeny základných ukazovateľov kvality vody vo vybranej vodárenskej nádrži pri meniacich sa hydrometeorologických podmienkach počas roka
Školiteľ: Ing. Yvetta Velísková, PhD.
Pracovisko: Ústav hydrológie SAV, v. v. i.
Študijný odbor: Poľnohospodárstvo a krajinárstvo
Náplňou dizertačnej práce bude sledovanie a analýza zmien základných ukazovateľov kvality vody vo vybraných vodárenských nádržiach v rôznych ročných obdobiach, lokalitách a pri rôznych hydrologických podmienkach.
