PhD in Palaeoclimatology of SW Amazonia 

Job position requirements (skills/languages/required experience)

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who holds a completed Master of Science in Earth Science or related disciplines.

The selected candidate will reconstruct a high resolution paleo precipitation record of the Bolivian Amazon by analysing the hydrogen isotope composition (δD) of plant waxes extracted from archaeological sites.

The PhD student will be responsible for one of the work packages of the European funded project DEMODRIVERS. S/He should be self-motivated and proactively address challenges and take responsibility for the sub-project. Good verbal and written English communication skills are a pre-requisite. Knowledge of organic geochemistry and geochemical laboratory methods are an advantage. The PhD student will be required to spend between 1 and 3 months in the Bolivian Amazon (Spanish language would be required) and a similar amount of time in Germany, hosted by co-supervisor and project collaborator Dr. Schefuß at MARUM (Bremen). At MARUM, s/he will have the opportunity to participate in method and soft skill courses, and networking opportunities. Candidates should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team. S/He is expected to present her/his results at international conferences and publish at least 3 papers in well-known scientific journals by the end of the 3-year position.

You will be co-supervised by Dr. Schefuß and spend a secondment at MARUM, where there is a dedicated laboratory equipped with several mass-spectrometers. You will be affiliated to the Institute of Science and Environmental Technology (ICTA-UAB), one of the most prestigious research centres in Spain. You will have a 3-year contract with a salary of 21.000 €, plus financial support to attend training courses, international conferences and stays in Bolivia and Germany.
