To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) at Karolinska Institutet performs interdisciplinary advanced research within environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with a focus on clarifying how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and how they interact with genes. IMM is a national expert body in environmental medicine and IMM's researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers and participate in national and international expert groups.

The doctoral position is located within the unit of occupational medicine at IMM. At the unit, various physical and psychosocial risk factors in working life and their impact on individuals' health are studied. The unit includes researchers with a background in medicine, epidemiology, psychology, physiotherapy, technology, social sciences, etc. and is responsible for the master’s program Work and Health. The unit employs several doctoral students and post-docs. The doctoral student will be offered regular seminars and group meetings.

The doctoral student will work within the larger research programme ALGOSH: Algorithmic management at work - challenges, opportunities and strategies for occupational safety and health and well-being .

In ALGOSH, the doctoral student will work in an international consortium of top researchers from Sweden, Finland, Canada, the USA, Spain and Australia, and have the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with other similar ongoing research projects. 

The PhD project will be based on a longitudinal mixed-methods case study in the transport sector and a cross-sectional national survey with focus on three sectors with high exposures of algorithmic management. Under supervision, the doctoral student will learn and be responsible for collecting, analysing, interpreting and presenting both qualitative and qualitative data from the studies. The results of this doctoral research will be presented at conferences and in scientific publications.

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B)can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education .

We think that you have a master’s degree in public health, political science, sociology, psychology, labor market studies, labor relations or labor law, but we are open to master’s degrees also in other subjects.

Requirements:
•    Very good communication skills in English and Swedish
•    Good ability to understand and write scientific texts in English.
•    Project management skills.
•    Genuine interest in the effects of technology on occupational safety and health.

Desirable:
•    Knowledge and experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
•    Understanding of the effects of technology on occupational safety and health.

To be eligible for this post, a master’s degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your master’s degree within the last three years. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
