There is an open call for applications for a research scholarship for Master, under the project “SMARTDEST”,funded by the program

Horizon2020 of the European Commission.

Admission Requirements:  Candidates with Master's Degree in Geography, Tourism or related areas, who are enrolled in PhD programs at the  Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, can apply to this call.

- Research interest in the impacts of tourism in Lisbon, demonstrated in the letter of motivation;

- Research interest in the life forms of mobile populations, namely, privileged migrants, digital nomads, demonstrated in the letter of interest.

- Mastery of the Portuguese and English languages ​​(fluency and rigor in oral and written expression).

Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions set out in Article 9 of the FCT I.P Research Grant Regulations (Regulation no. 950/2019, published in Diário da República, 2nd Series, no. 241 of 16 December 2021).

The SMARTDEST project is implemented by a consortium of 12 partners of 7 EU countries. They aim to develop innovative solutions in the face of externalities that are emerging as a result of new forms of tourist mobility. Externalities include the increased cost of life, problems of access to housing, congestion of public space, and other forms of exclusion of the most vulnerable sectors of communities residents. Therefore, the main objective of SMARTDEST is to contribute to urban policy agendas that consider tourism and its social effects.

The project thus includes 4 research packages which, respectively, (1) they analyze tourist mobilities as transforming forces of places; (2) explore 8 case studies in Europe on ways to mitigate the externalities caused by tourist mobilities; (3) develop CityLabs with local stakeholders to design innovative solutions; (4) and transfer the results obtained by the project to the EU policy space.

In this context, the scholarship aims to explore point 1: tourist mobility as transforming forces of places; and explore ways to integrate these mobility with the local population. And point 3: work with stakeholders locations.


- The scholarship holder should work together with the project team, especially in objective 3 mentioned above;

- Provide support in different project tasks, namely in the writing of reports and preparation of team meetings;

- Develop original research on tourist mobility under the guidance project researchers' science;

-Participate in meetings with the project's international partners. the language of work is english.

Workplace

The work will be carried out in the Centro de Estudos Geográficos of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, under the under the scientific supervision of Doctor Agustín Cocola-Gant (project coordinator) and Doctor Eduardo Brito-Henriques, Associate Professor of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon.

Duration:

The scholarship will have a duration of 6 (six) months, starting in January 2023, on an exclusive basis. The grant may eventually be renewed for an additional period of 3 (three) months.

Start date:

Scheduled to start in January 2023, on an exclusive basis;

Monthly salary:

The amount of the grant corresponds to €1,144.64, according to the table of values of the grants directly awarded by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores ).

Selection criteria:

The applicable selection method will be the curricular evaluation of the candidates.

The curricular assessment (CA) includes the following parameters following parameters:

- Degree Classification (15%);

- Classification of the master's degree (15%);

- Letter of Motivation (40%);

- Experience in relevant topics (20%)

- Mastery of the Portuguese and English languages ​​(fluency and rigor in the oral and written expression) (10%).

The jury may, if deemed necessary, call for an interview (E) the candidates placed in the first 3 positions. The interview (E) will take place in account 2 (two) parameters:

- Curriculum discussion (weighting 60%);

- Interpersonal skills and motivation (40% weighting).

In this case, the interview (E) has a weight of 30%, to be added to the score obtained in the first selection phase, which will enter with a weight of 70%:

Final Classification = (CA × 70%) + (E x 30%)

The interview (E) will take place at a date and time to be communicated timely to the candidates.

In case the jury decides not to carry out the interview, the final ranking of the candidates will be made according to the evaluations obtained in the curriculum evaluation.

The jury may not award the scholarship if the candidates do not correspond to the intended profile.

Jury:

The selection board for applications for this scholarship is composed of the following elements:

President of the Jury: Doctor Jennifer Mcgarrigle, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon;

1st Effective Member: Doctor Agustín Cocola-Gant, Project Coordinator, Researcher Marie Curie, University of Leeds.

2nd Effective Member: Doctor Franz Buhr, Junior Researcher at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon;

1st Alternate Member: Doctor Eduardo Brito-Henriques, Associate Professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon;

Results

The final results of the evaluation will be communicated to the candidates by means of a notification sent to the e-mail address indicated for this purpose. If the result is unfavourable to the award of the scholarship requested, the candidates have a period of 10  working days to respond if they wish, under the terms of articles 121 and 122 of the Administrative Procedure Code (DL nº 4/2015 of January 7 and its amendments).

The selected candidate must express his/her intention to accept the scholarship in writing acceptance of the scholarship. In the event of non-acceptance, the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate in order of final ranking.

The call is open for the period of November 30th to December 15th 2022.

Concerning the certificate of qualifications if the degree has been obtained in a foreign institution, it must be must be recognized by a Portuguese institution in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August and Ministerial Order no. 33/2019, of 25 of January, in its wording in force at the date of application);

d) Proof of enrolment in a doctoral programme;

e) In the case of foreign citizens, document proving residency in Portugal, namely residence permit or other document

legally equivalent;

f) Other supporting documents deemed relevant;

g) Declaration of prior consent by electronic means.
