Offer Description

About the job

A PhD Candidate position in the field of molecular-based ferroelectric materials development for electrical energy storage capacitors is available. The academic position will provide the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD degree, related to the DYNASTORE project. The DYNASTORE project aims to engineer new supramolecular materials with large polarisation for recyclable high electrical energy density storage capacitors.

The tasks for the PhD Candidate will cover the development of new supramolecular and ionic molecular materials. The position involves material synthesis, characterization of structure including in situ X-ray diffraction under electric fields, thermal stability, electrical properties, as well as making of proof-of-concept recyclable device. For the position as a PhD candidate, the goal is a completed education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The successful candidate will be affiliated to the FACET research group at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at NTNU and work in a multidisciplinary and international environment. Information about the research group can be found here.

The supervisor team will consist of Professor Mari-Ann Einarsrud, Professor Sverre Magnus Selbach and Associate Professor Julian Walker.

Duties of the position

The PhD Candidate will be involved in the development of new supramolecular and ionic molecular materials for high electrical energy density storage capacitors in addition to advanced characterization of the materials to reveal structure (diffraction, total scattering and spectroscopy), materials stability (thermogravimetric analysis), phase transitions (differential scanning calorimetry) and electrical properties (dielectric spectroscopy, ferroelectric and electromechanical measurements). The PhD Candidate will plan and conduct experiments according to the project objectives with support from the supervisors. In situ XRD characterisation under electrical field will be a part of the studies as well as the development of processing and recycling pathways for ferroelectric devices via dissolution and separation methods. The results of the project are expected to be published in scientific journals and presented at national and international conferences.

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in materials chemistry, materials science and engineering, nanotechnology or materials and solid state physics.
  • You must be familiar with basics of ferroelectric materials and relevant characterisation techniques.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master students who expect to complete their studies by summer 2024 are encouraged to apply. Employment will then be postponed until the Master's degree is finished.
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the Faculty of Natural Sciences doctoral program  https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd
  • You must be able to communicate fluently in English and have good communication skills.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Preferred selection criteria

A strong background and hands-on experience in functional materials, e.g., ferroelectric or supramolecular materials synthesis and characterization is desired. Knowledge of organic and molecular chemistry is an advantage. In addition, the ideal candidate has a good understanding of running complex experiments. Knowledge of a Scandinavian language is considered as a plus.

Personal characteristics

The candidate should:

  • be creative and innovative
  • take responsibility for own progress and be able to work independently
  • be able to collaborate closely with other members of the FACET research team
  • be diligent and able to show initiative on behalf of own work
