Join us to help along the much-needed decarbonizing activities of the building sector! We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate with an interest to work across disciplines, scales and stakeholders towards a zero-emission society.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is looking for a PhD candidate within the topic of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions initiatives in building planning, construction and management. The position is related to the international research project IEA EBC Annex 89 which focuses on the pathways and actions needed to implement whole life-cycle based net-zero GHG emissions from buildings in policy and practice. Your main supervisor will be associate professor Freja Nygaard Rasmussen.

The PhD work will be on parts of the following Annex 89 activities, with a stronger focus on (1) in-practice uptake and effective implementations:

  • Understanding the conditions that are conducive for in-practice uptake and more effective implementation of context-based solutions and actions by key stakeholders. This involves knowledge building on the potential for different individuals to make and influence decisions, as well as the impact of different tools, regulations and procedures.
  • Developing guidelines and recommendations on establishing whole life carbon targets for the building and real estate sector at various scales and perspectives and identifying critical carbon reduction pathways and actions.   
  • Establishing Paris-goal compatible assessment frameworks and evaluating the suitability and application(s) of different assessment methods to achieve net-zero emission buildings at various scales.
  • Mapping and assessing the relevance and effectiveness of a range of tools, aids and instruments available to different stakeholders in their decision-making contexts and objectives

Collaborations with other PhD students and researchers from the 20+ countries of the IEA EBC Annex 89 will be part of the PhD work.

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

Your immediate leader will be the Head of Department.

Duties of the position

  • Qualitative and quantitative data collection, management and analysis
  • Collaborate and coordinate with institute- and international project partners
  • Write and publish scientific papers
  • Produce project deliverables
  • Supervise or co-supervise Master’s students

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in building engineering, management engineering, environmental sciences, architecture or social sciences
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented by the starting date of employment at NTNU
  • You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
  • Proven analytical and computational capabilities, in courses and or/thesis deliverables
  • Proven written and oral English communication skills

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 

Preferred selection criteria

  • Subject knowledge regarding building/construction value chain and life cycle management
  • Completed courses in life cycle assessment (LCA) and/or life cycle costing (LCC)
  • Understanding of socio-technical analytical approaches
  • Proven experience in collaborative research projects
  • Good written and oral Scandinavian language skills

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/studies/phiv ) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
