About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree. The PhD-position is a temporary position for a period of four years with teaching obligations.

The PhD position is an educational position that gives a promising research recruit the possibility for scientific development. The successful candidate will join the European Research Council funded “LEGACIES” project, which aims to understand how historical states affect conflict and democratization in the modern world. The successful candidate will build a project around either understanding historical states and international systems (especially non-western states and systems), and/or analyzing their impact on civil war, nonviolent protest, democratization or another relevant aspect of institutions and dissent. The position is open in relation to methodological background, but it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to aspects of the data collection associated with the LEGACIES project, and skills in quantitative data collection and analysis are advantageous. 

The position is also connected to the Centre of Democratization and Resistance (CoDR) at ISS to promote research and teaching on why political institutions change and the role of contention and resistance in this process. CoDR has a historical focus on the drivers of democratization and contention, especially the role of historical and precolonial states and forms of political organization, forms of colonial governance and economic change, historical systems of economic organization, and historical patterns in conflict and warfare.

Job description

  • The PhD-candidate is expected to contribute to the LEGACIES project through participation in group meetings and data collection associated with the project, in addition to participation in the “Political Instability and Armed Conflict” research group.
  • The PhD candidate is expected to develop and implement a research project analyzing aspects of historical states and international systems, and/or their impacts on modern institutions and dissent.
  • It is required that the candidate participates in international activities, among others through conference attendance and/or research stays at educational institutions abroad.
  • The position is ascribed teaching work for one year, and it is expected that the candidate contributes to teaching in the fields associated with or related to the topics of the LEGACIES project and adjacent areas in Department as part of this. 

Required selection criteria

  • You must have a professionally relevant background in social science preferably political science, international relations, or sociology
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average from the master degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to grade of B or better in terms of NTNU’s grading scale . Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. . If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • A PhD project relevant to the core research objectives of the LEGACIES project.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

Preferred selection criteria

  • 1-2 years relevant experience in research, such as dissemination and participation in research project, is advantageous.
  • Documented training and experience in quantitative data collection and analysis, and/or experience using Geographical Information Systems, will be considered advantageous.

Personal qualifications such as independence, organization, initiative, cooperative spirit, and motivation to contribute to an inclusive work environment will be ascribed high importance.

In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, grades from the masters degree, experience and personal suitability and motivation for the position.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years with the 1 year (25 %) teaching duties.

Appointment to a PhD position requires admission to the PhD programme in Social Sciences , specializing in political science/sociology. As a PhD candidate, you undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. A condition of appointment is that you are in fact qualified for admission to the PhD programme within three months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.

After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

About the application

  • A copy of the master's thesis. If you recently have submitted your master's thesis, you can attach a draft of the thesis. Documentation of a completed master's degree must be presented before taking up the position
  • If you have publications and other relevant scientific work (max. 3 publications), please attach these.
