PhD position
We welcome you as an applicant for a vacant PhD position in Human-AI Interaction (creativity, learning, and artificial intelligence) at SLATE, Faculty of Psychology. The position is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years, associated with the AI LEARN centre and is financed by the Research Council of Norway.

AI LEARN is a new national center dedicated to the empowerment of human learning through responsible, human-centred artificial intelligence. In a world where AI systems are reshaping how we learn, work, create, lead, and participate in democracy, our center tackles the promise and peril of hybrid intelligence—humans and machines working and learning together. Our mission is to establish an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub that advances foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance and broad capacity building. AI LEARN is a consortium of 31 national and international partners from academia and the public and private sectors.

About the project
This position is linked to a cluster of Ethics, Governance and Regulation. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of the reconfigurations, practices, networks, and/or collaborations in human-AI constellations.
The PhD supervisors will be Postdoctoral Research Fellow Dr. Anja Salzmann (UiB) and Co-supervisor Prof. Wayne Holmes (University College London, UCL).

About the work tasks:
- Investigate and explore ethical issues (e.g. human dignity, social justice, or human agency, human flourishing) in the context of the political, economic, social, cultural or environmental framings, impacts and consequences of AI (including but not limited to Generative AI) in different learning contexts (e.g., K-12, informal/formal training, vocational or professional development)
- Conduct qualitative empirical research grounded in relevant theory to inform, for example, ethical frameworks (or similar) in policy, professional development, vocational training, curriculum development and pedagogy in a specific learning context.
- Active participation in the activities of AI LEARN and contribute to the life of the Centre
Qualifications and personal qualities:
You must:
- Hold a relevant master's degree in any of the following disciplinary fields: social sciences, education, science and technology studies (STS), philosophy or other relevant fields, at the time of applying
- Organise dissemination and communication activities within the AI LEARN centre
- Be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have good collaboration skills
- Possess excellent written and oral English skills
It is an advantage if you:
- Have evidence of a demonstrated interest in the ethical issues raised by AI in learning contexts
A grade of B or higher on the master’s thesis, or the average grade of the qualifying degree, is normally required for admission to the PhD program at the faculty. Personal qualities will be emphasised. Ambition and potential will also be taken into account in the assessment of candidates.

About the PhD position: The duration of the PhD position is 3 years and is linked to AI LEARN Cluster on Ethics, Governance and Regulation. Applicants must not have previously held a fixed-term appointment as a PhD Research Fellow at the University of Bergen, and must not already have obtained a doctoral degree (PhD).
About the PhD programme:
As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. When your qualification for the position is evaluated, you will also be evaluated for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Psychology.

- A brief account of your research interests and motivation for applying for the position
- Project proposal (5-8 pages incl. references)
- The proposal should present the topic, the research problem(s) and choice of theory and methods. The proposal should also include a progress plan for the different parts of the project. Candidates called in for an interview, will be asked to present their proposal.

- The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be your main supervisor for your master's thesis or equivalent thesis.
