PhD position (3 years)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, a full-time PhD position is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the recently established Centre for Complex Conditions and Ageing (CC.AGE), financed by the Trond Mohn Foundation. CC.AGE is a part of the Centre for Elderly and Nursing Home Medicine (SEFAS), led by Professor Bettina S. Husebø. SEFAS has 15 employees and is growing rapidly with several new researcher positions. SEFAS has its offices at the Alrek Health Cluster in Bergen with high focus on innovation, interprofessional collaboration, user involvement, and collaboration with industry partners. CC.AGE has close collaboration with the Department of Informatics, University of Bergen (UiB); Centre for Nutrition, Department of Clinical Medicine, UiB, and Bergen Centre for Ethics and Priority Setting in Health (BCEPS), UiB.

CC.AGE is formally starting in February 2024, aimed to support older adults to live safely and independently at home by exploring and developing relevant technology. This doctoral research fellow position is closely connected to an active research network with experience and expertise from complex health interventions in home-dwelling older adults, and people with complex conditions, including dementia and Parkinson’s disease. The project is expected to produce results of high clinical relevance that qualify for publications in international renowned peer-reviewed scientific journals. SEFAS facilitates scientific career building with a long-term perspective.

About the project/work tasks:
  • The candidate will contribute to setting up the procedures for data collection with sensing devices, support the data management process, and perform analyses of quantitative data from sensors using signal processing, modelling, dynamic systems and/or artificial intelligence
  •  The candidate will work interdisciplinarily and design new digital biomarkers for tracking the health status and quality of life of older adults with complex conditions. A series of state-of-the art algorithms and models are estimated to be produced through this thesis, which has the potential to be situated at the cutting-edge of research in this field
  • The candidate will contribute to the development of a digital platform as part of the project, beginning with requirements, preliminary design, algorithms, and other tasks as needed. The development will be in collaboration with Youwell in an agile setting
  • The candidate will contribute to the completion of the study together with the rest of the project group which will consist of clinical researchers, engineers, other research fellows, and statisticians

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in computer science, systems engineering, cybernetics, applied mathematics or another relevant degree at the same level, and applicants must also have a specialization in bioinformatics, machine learning/artificial intelligence, simulation/visualization, dynamic systems, or signal processing/computer science
  • Experience from or formal training within health technology, analysis and processing of large data sets, signal processing or programming will be emphasized (relevant programs include for instance: Matlab, Python, R)
  • Prior experience from elderly care or research is an advantage but is not essential
  • Good Norwegian language skills is an advantage
  • Experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • Ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD position:

PhD positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
