About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The NTNU Department of Geoscience and Petroleum (IGP) is looking for a highly motivated, independent geo-scientist for a full-time three-year PhD student position on the topic ‘Basement inheritance impact on rift evolution and rifted margin formation’.

The project aims to investigate the influence of the pre-rift basement characteristics on rift evolution. Through a multi-disciplinary approach (including geophysical and geological constraints), the PhD candidate will characterise the geometry, rheology, composition, and structural setting of the basement at pre-rift stage for rifts and rifted margins developing on orogenic terranes. She/he will combine interpretations of offshore seismic reflection profiles, potential field data, geophysical modelling, and plate reconstructions. Supervisor will be Professor Gwenn-Peron-Pinvidic (NTNU).

This doctoral position is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network TALENTS, a European-based research network. TALENTS aims at training early career researchers with the interdisciplinary, science-driven understanding and skills that are the foundation to develop new sustainable solutions for the global challenges of the energy transition. We focus on continental rifts which are key regions for geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage, new resources such as native hydrogen as well as high-risk human habitats due to geohazards such as earthquakes and volcanic activity. TALENTS fuses research and training at 18 European institutes and academic partners as well as 11 companies that are actively involved in the energy transition. The doctoral network is centred around 12 individual PhD projects addressing fundamental scientific aspects of rift system processes, collectively bridging several orders of magnitude of spatial and temporal scales. Each doctoral candidate is linked to a second academic partner to complement and broaden their scientific training and to a dedicated industry partner to acquire industry-relevant skills and preview possible non-academic career paths.

Required selection criteria

The available position is free to apply for, given that the following criteria defined by the EU are fulfilled by the applicant:

  • All researchers recruited in a doctoral network must be Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs; i.e., be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree).
  • Researchers can be of any nationality.
  • Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
  • The mobility rule applies to the (first) beneficiary where the researcher is recruited, and not to beneficiaries to which the researcher is sent or seconded. It is also only determined at one point in time: that of the fellow's first recruitment in the project
  • The position requires a strong background and interest in Geology, Tectonics, Structural Geology, Seismic Interpretation, Geophysical methods.
  • Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level.
  • You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate  and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant 


Preferred selection criteria
  • We seek a candidate with a background in geology but with skills in seismic interpretation and/or geophysical modeling, alternatively a geophysicist with a strong geology background.
  • Experience with extensional tectonic environments, such as rifts and rifted margins will be an advantage.
  • Experience with interpretation of seismic reflection data, using modern seismic interpretation software such as Petrel, will be desired.
  • Experience with other mapping tools such as Geosoft or ArcGis will be an advantage.
  • Good written and oral English language skills are required.
  • Good communication and collaboration skills are required.

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. The starting date for the position is no later than 1 August 2024.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering (https://www.ntnu.edu/iv/doctoral-programme ) within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants , and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding.

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
