Offer Description
This is NTNU

NTNU is a broad-based university with a technical-scientific profile and a focus in professional education. The university is located in three cities with headquarters in Trondheim.

At NTNU, 9,000 employees and 43,000 students work to create knowledge for a better world.

You will find more information about working at NTNU and the application process here.

About the job

A three-year PhD position in biotechnology with a focus on glycosyltransferase engineering and ploysaccharide characterization is available in the group of Assoc. Prof. Gaston Courtade at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway.

The goal of the position is that the PhD will complete a doctoral education programme, contribute significantly to the PolyMod project, and obtain a doctoral degree.

The PhD candidate will work as part of the PolyMod project, aiming to model and engineer glycosyltransferases involved in xanthan assembly to produce novel polysaccharides. The candidate will work on generating variants of glycosyltransferases and screening the activity of these glycosyltransferase variants, expressing them in Xanthomonas campestris and E. coli using specific plasmids, and producing polysaccharides by cultivating the variants. Finally, novel polysaccharides identified will be characterized in depth using various methods. These include monosaccharide analysis, rheological measurements, NMR spectroscopy for fragment and linkage analysis, and size-exclusion chromatography with multi-angle light scattering. Impacts from the project will include a molecular biology and analytical toolbox to produce and characterize novel polysaccharides for industrial applications.

The project is in close collaboration with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Schmid (University of Münster) and the PhD candidate will work closely with other PhD and master students.

You will report to Assoc. Prof. Gaston Courtade. More information about the research group can be found at https://www.ntnu.edu/ibt/courtade-lab

Duties of the position
  • Design of lab experiments to generate mutants of glycosyltransferases
  • Cultivation of bacterial strains to produce xanthan and glycosyltransferase
  • Characterization of polysaccharides using HPLC, MS, NMR, light scattering, or other methods
  • Analysis of data collected from experiments
  • Preparation of manuscripts and doctoral thesis based on research findings
  • Presentation of results at group meetings and scientific conferences
