PhD position

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Biomedicine, a full-time PhD-position is available for a period of three (3) years, with starting date as soon as possible, and before summer 2024. The position is part of the project “Novel genetic integrin alpha11 mouse models: closing in on cardiac fibrosis ”, funded by Nasjonalforeningen for folkhelsen. In the group of Prof. D. Gullberg, there is an interest in understanding the role of integrin alpha11 in tissue and tumor fibrosis. In a close collaboration with groups at the University of  Oslo the and University of Oulu, Finland,  the group has an ongoing collaboration to investigate the role of integrin alpha11 in human and mouse cardiac fibrosis.


About the project/work tasks:
  • take part in characterizing a new fluorescent reporter mouse strain with regards to integrin alpha11 promoter activity in embryos and in hearts subjected to aortic banding
  •  characterize alpha11 expression and function in the heart of a novel humanized knock-in mouse strain
  • take part in detailed epitope mapping of integrin alpha11 monoclonal antibodies
  •  investigate the role of mechanoregulation for integrin alpha11 expression and function.

Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicant must hold a master`s degree or equivalent in Cell Biology, Pharmacology, or Molecular Biology
  •             Experience from relevant research projects will be considered as positive. Specifically, previous experience in: 1) culture of mammary cells, 2) genotyping and analyzing transgenic mice 3) experience of advanced microscopic imaging of cultured cells, is         desirable.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others
  • Ability and motivation to carry out a PhD project
  • The applicant must be fluent in oral and written English, see documentation requirements

Organized research training (PhD program):

The candidate must take part in the University of Bergen approved PhD programme leading to the degree within a time limit of 3 years. You must have admission to the organized research training (PhD program) at the Faculty in order to qualify for the position.

Application for admission to the PhD programme, including a project plan outline for the training plan must be submitted no later than three months after the date of commencement.

The PhD-position:

PhD-positions are fixed term positions. You cannot be employed in a PhD-position for more than one fixed term period at the same institution or have had similar employment at an institution in the region.
